居住在高緯度的麋鹿，也是氣候暖化的受害者。根據美國政府單位報告指出，北美麋鹿因不明原因，數量突然大減，迫使當局數十年來首度頒布禁捕麋鹿的命令。位於北歐的麋鹿，則疑因為氣候暖化造成吸血蟲大量出現，被叮咬的麋鹿出現異常大量的脫毛現象。

根據美國「明尼蘇達州自然資源部」去年提出的研究報告指出，當地麋鹿數量在2012年到2013年之間減少的比例多達35％，2010年以來減少比例更高達52％，不僅如此，麋鹿還深受吸血蟲與其他疾病困擾。根據明尼蘇達州自然資源部網站表示，北美麋鹿數量減少的原因眾多，包括麋鹿腦部的寄生蟲繁殖以及溫度升高等原因，為了保護麋鹿，聯邦首度在數十年來宣布麋鹿禁捕令。

一名曾與當地政府部門調查麋鹿生態的記者班蔻表示，「大約4％的麋鹿腦部都被發現有腦蟲寄生過後癒合的傷疤，一旦寄生蟲侵入到重要腦部組織，就會造成麋鹿死亡。」

另外，她也指出，約有3成的麋鹿都被驗出西尼羅河病毒陽性反應。

同樣是麋鹿棲息地之一的北歐，麋鹿數量雖然未像北美麋鹿大量減少，但卻飽受「脫毛」所苦。根據挪威獸醫研究所研究者肯努特表示，一般麋鹿身上約有3500隻吸鹿血昆蟲，但最新的調查卻指出，目前一隻麋鹿約附著超過1萬6千隻的吸血昆蟲，她說，「學者們對於吸血昆蟲和造成麋鹿病態脫毛是否有直接關聯仍無法肯定，但是從理論來看似乎有可能。」

研究者認為，出現不尋常的大量吸血昆蟲，麋鹿在一天被叮咬次數多達20次的情況下，容易造成麋鹿皮膚沉重負擔而發炎，過度遭受蟲咬甚至會阻止血液流動而影響毛髮生長，加上挪威自1940年來，當地溫度屢創歷史新高，導致吸血昆蟲數量暴增，這種現象助長挪威地區麋鹿的掉毛惡夢。
