7、8月開始是台灣的颱風季節，每年都會有3到5個颱風侵襲台灣。颱風兵臨城下的時候，最重要的是它目前所在的位置。
「颱風距離宜蘭東南方約770公里，而且以每小時22公里的速度移動。」英文怎麼說？
The eye of the storm is currently some 770 kilometers east-southeast of Yilan, and is moving at some 22 kilometers per hour.
【解析】
颱風的中心位置以颱風眼為準，而颱風眼是the eye of the storm。句中的兩個some不是「一些」；some放在數字之前要解釋為「大約」。英文裡要說「方位」時，要用「（to the）方位 + of + 地名」的方式，所以「台中位在台北的南方」要說「Taichung is located (to the) south of Taipei.」此句中的east-southeast是「東南東」方向。別小看方位的說法，多益測驗Part 4的聽力部份就曾出現「位於波士頓北邊的軌道工程」的說法— the track work north of Boston。
我們常在颱風來臨時，聽到氣象局發布的海上颱風警報或陸上颱風警報。英文裡的「陸上與海上颱風警報都已發布，有效地區涵蓋全國與附近周邊水域。」怎麼說？
Land and sea warnings are in effect for the entire country and the surrounding waters.
【解析】
動詞的warn是「警告」，而名詞的warning可作「警告、告誡」或「警報」。effect是「效果、效力、影響」，而片語in effect是「生效、在實行中」之意，但是多益測驗更常見的是它的形容詞effective，是「有效的」。
例句：
The manager is working on effective ways of reducing overtime.（經理正在想辦法找出減少加班的有效方法。）
此外，water（水）是不可數名詞，不加 s 的！但是「水域」卻要加 s。
每逢颱風來襲，台灣常會發生土石流與淹水；不只台灣，現在全世界各地都因為極端氣候而更常發生土石流與淹水。英文裡的「中央氣象局警告山區土石流與可能發生淹水。」怎麼說？
The Central Weather Bureau is warning of the danger of landslides in the mountains, as well as the possibility of floods.
【解析】
bureau在英文裡有政府機構的「局、司、署、處」之意，世界上最著名的「局」是FBI—Federal Bureau of Investigation，即所謂的「聯邦調查局」。大家最害怕的土石流是landslide，而淹水、洪水、水災是flood。
強風暴雨之下，學生、家長、上班族最關心的事情是要不要停止上班上課。「隨著颱風到來，北中台所有地區今日其餘時間已經停止上班上課。」英文媒體如何表達呢？
With the storm, all of northern and central Taiwan have called off school and work for the rest of the day.
【解析】
call雖然是「打電話」，但是動詞片語call off卻是取消、撤銷、停止進行的意思，在此是停止學校與工作場所的活動，就是指「停止上班上課」。
